CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Makoto Kikuchi
Age: 17 (She's 20 now in Ryslig canon)
Canon: THE iDOLM@STER
Canon Point: Post-movie.
Character Information: Episode summary and movie summary. If need be, I can type out the stuff relevant to Makoto but she is present in nearly every episode in varying capacities so I hope this works! Unfortunately, her actual wikipage covers the gacha games and the video games more than the anime.

Personality:
A large part of why Makoto is the way she is is because of her father, for better or for worse. See, her father only wanted a son, not a daughter. So, of course, when it was revealed that he had a daughter... he refused to embrace the fact that he had a daughter. He chose to raise her as a son, with all that it entailed, from her name to how she behaved to what she participated in. In fact, wearing feminine clothes was straight up banned and our introduction to her in the show has her reading a shoujo manga and talking about how no one should tell her father that she's reading it lest he get angry with her. As a result, Makoto is a tomboy, plain and simple. She's a black belt in aikido and is good at nearly every sport she touches, speaks in a way similar to a guy, and naturally carries herself in a way that makes her fans think of her as a pretty-boy idol. People have fallen in love with her because of how boyish she can seem at times... and man, she hates that.

Makoto has a quick temper, and mentioning how boyish she can be and that her popularity is because of it is something of a trigger for her in the sense that it can make her go from a friendly, pleasant person to be around to yelling about how her father has ruined her life by not letting her embrace her femininity. See, Makoto wants to be a girl. She wants to wear skirts and sparkles and frills, she wants to read shoujo manga, and she wants to be known as a cutesy idol rather than the boyish idol. She wants to be free to express her femininity, and she isn't. Even as an idol, she's still typically assigned 'male' roles in the shows she acts in or in the photoshoots that she participates in. Of course, she gets to wear sparkles and frills and skirts to a point, but still not quite in the way that she wants. When she does get to take control of the situation, she puts on the cutest, frilliest things she can manage, pitches her voice higher to come up with some cute catchphrase, and... it just falls totally flat because it's not natural for her and no one seems to like it. Not the girls that comprise the vast majority of her fans or the guys seem into it and some are completely weirded out by her actions.

Ultimately, Makoto's arc as an idol is devoted to her learning to reconcile both the masculine and feminine parts of her personality and that it doesn't have to be an either-or situation. She doesn't have to be the most feminine person ever to be feminine, and she knows that she has a role to play as well as an idol. Of course, she still wants to be the girly girl that her heart yearns to be, but she accepts that there is more to her than that and that the right people will come along eventually. Until then, she needs to embrace who she is and what her job is to make people happy, and to try to attain her own happiness. It's this realization that ultimately makes her much more comfortable in her skin, too. It just makes her happier to be able to embrace her boyishness than to actively fight against it. She knows that she has her own fairytale ending ahead of her, but for now, she's content with trying to make everyone else smile.

For now, though, let's take a moment to hit the rewind button. It was mentioned earlier that Makoto is prone to just start yelling about things when she's angry, but this can apply to her passion and protectiveness. As a person, she can go from zero to one hundred in a second flat, and there is rarely a middle ground for her. As an example, there was a point where Makoto was led to believe that a friend of hers was kidnapped. Instead of calling the police or letting someone else handle it, she grabs a taxi and creates a lot of property damage while fighting some thugs in a quest to keep her friend safe and sound. It later turned out that said friend was actually okay, but the point is that her hotbloodedness will lead her to doing extreme things. It can easily be as minor as yelling out her feelings, and that is what it typically is, but like the last example implies, it's not limited to just that.

The whole zero to one hundred thing can apply to more than just her hotbloodedness, too. It encompasses a number of things from how she expresses herself to her determination and focus and work ethic. See, Makoto isn't really the kind of person to do things halfway and leave it at that like previously stated. Her energy knows no bounds, and it's rare to just see her flopping around uselessly. She's always out and doing something, and her gestures are big and wild in comparison to some of her friends. She's just expressive in how she carries herself and you are guaranteed to know how she feels about something. Does she moderate how she feels sometimes so as to not seem like a burden to others? Yeah, she totally does, but that doesn't mean that she's going to straight up hide what she feels either. That's just about the only time she tries to moderate herself, because she would rather support her friends than have them support her.

Which, speaking of, Makoto has a huge heart. She loves her friends deeply and will do anything for them and their happiness, even the ones that she argues with a lot. If they need something, she is on it immediately. If they need her help? Yeah, she's there. If they need a boost in confidence? Yep. In fact, during a sports competition, there were a bunch of people bullying one of her coworkers and friends and telling her that she wasn't good enough and that she was holding everything back. Makoto had been hurt earlier in the day, but decided to stay in the final race despite the injury to support her friend. In a fit of hotblooded determination and love of her friend, along with the support of everyone in 765 Productions, she took off and won the race even as she struggled with the pain in her knee. And then, even when she's given the trophy and called the MVP, she makes the decision to hand the trophy off to her bullied friend, saying that it belongs to her more than anything else. She's sincere in her emotions and in her support of others, and none of this is something that she keeps hidden. Even if she argues with her friends over things, it tends to be the lighthearted sort of arguing that only friends have, and they never leave it on a bad note if it can be helped.

All of this is a testament to her determination as well, because once she has her mind set on something, she won't let anyone actually stop her. One of her dreams is to become one of the best dancers in 765 Productions, and she spends a lot of her time practicing dance because of it. She's determined to save her friends if they end up in sticky situations. And frankly, her dream is to become a popular idol. That alone takes a lot of determination, because it's easy to get lost in the crowd and rise above everyone else. She doesn't let having to start from the bottom stop her from achieving her dream, and she steadily works her way up because of her determination to keep doing better for both herself, her fellow idols, and her fans. To become as popular as she is, though, it still takes a lot of charisma. She could easily be the most determined girl ever, but the reason that she causes so many fans to swoon when she's pretending to be their prince is purely because she's just charismatic. She treats everyone well and makes them feel loved and wanted! And as far as school goes, Makoto is one of the most popular girls at the school she attends, even before taking in the fact that she's an idol.

In her every day life she is cheerful and energetic and completely content with just doing normal things when the chance arises, while relishing being in the company of other people. It's why she visits the office on her days off sometimes, so that she can meet and hang out with her friends and deal with whatever antics they're getting up to that day. However, if she has to do things like study, she's fine with just sitting down and studying because she knows that it's an important thing for her to do. If she has to sit down and figure out something, she'll put her all into it and take it seriously until she's got it sorted out. Despite everything that might make that seem contrary to her behavior, she is excellent at focusing and getting things done. Like previously mentioned, she doesn't do anything halfway and that applies here as well. To go along with what she's like in normal company, she's actually quite easy to placate with a few kind words and some compliments on how well she's doing (as far as some jobs go!), but even outside of her work, she can be quite easy to convince and calm down. So while she may be quick to raise her hackles due to her quick temper, it can be quite easy to placate her and convince her to calm down depending on what the situation may be. Also, she can be easily tricked into doing or saying silly things even if it's as simple as saying "good night" when she should be saying "good morning".

Also, finally, despite the air of confidence, charisma, and bravery that Makoto tends to put forth thanks to her upbringing and warm personality, she's actually quite easily scared and startled. Cockroaches make her scream her head off and ghost stories terrify her badly enough to make her want to share a futon with a friend so she doesn't have to be alone. For anyone that doesn't know her, this might come off as surprising because it's not typically a side that she shows people, but sometimes it just can't be helped because man, cockroaches are gross (and bugs in general by extension) and supernatural stuff is spooky.
